Recording the Goldberg Variations

The Goldberg Variations were recorded in the upstairs foyer of the Old Teachers' College Armidale, late at night.

Initially we had serious noise in the equipment and tried everything to locate and reduce it. In the end, despite having changed leads, mics, power supply location and even constructing a Faraday cage out of chicken wire, we found that this paper tray worked really well. How long did it take to figure this out? Don't ask.

We used Røde NT2 as the main mics and stereo paired NT3s for the room.

Notice our audience in the background,

they never complained.

Focusrite pro 10 I/O, MacBook and Logic Express. To minimise fan noise we kept the gear as far from the mics as possible and used an Apple remote to control the recording process.
